Finnish jazz hit a rare point of alignment in the summer of 1970, when a one-off Jyvaskyla Workshop Band brought a startling mix of local and global heavyweights, including bassist Arild Andersen and visiting composer Charlie Mariano. Long thought lost to time, this yet unheard concert shows just how far Finland's scene had pushed into post-bop, modal and spiritual reserves by the dawn of the decade. Mariano's use of the nadaswaram - an instrument he had begun exploring after travels in South India - gives certain passages an unexpected tonal sting, while the horn line of Eero Koivistoinen, Pekka Poyry, Paroni Paakkunainen and Seppo Ranniko moves easily between tight writing and open-form risk-taking. The engine room of Heikki Sarmanto, Andersen, Matti Koskiala and Edward Vesala drives everything with an elastic, communal pulse.
